Hey, I'm Zachary Guerrera. Media has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I know I want it to be a part of my professional career in some way but I have no idea how. I think maybe somewhere in audio, but like I said, no real idea. One thing I've liked the most about college is my exposure to so much different stuff that I would have had no idea about back home. My horizons have really expanded and I've only been here a few weeks. Musically, that means I've picked up alot of new artists and bands that I really like.
Here are some of them:
Del tha Funkee Homosapien/Deltron 3030
Black Kids
My Bloody Valentine
Also there are others, such as Justice, MGMT, or Crystal Castles which I liked, and a few of my friends liked, but I was unaware of how big a following they had till I got here.
Another thing musically that I'm into now is "Glitchhop" its kinda hard to explain, but here is a Dj set of it.
Turbo Krunk Arcade by Simpill
One of the things that has interested me the most about the internet is how it has allowed the rise and fall of subculture and genre at such a rapid pace. New fusion oriented styles are being created and forgotten constantly. It really amazes me.
From Chapters 1-4 I have learned, or learned about, some interesting things. One of them is the role that the internet has in democratic society. On, for instance, an online political debate BBS, you can debate political topics anonymously. The person you debate gun control with could be your next door neighbor, or it could be Obama. You judge them, and they judge you, solely by what you say, and choose to reveal.
The convergence of media that has been happening is also of interest. Almost all media that we consume now has converged in some way. When you watch news, they use the internet to have "instapolls" that show viewer reactions. It is impossible to just use the internet and view text now. It is all connected through music, video, and community content. With this has come another key concept, that most of our media is being controlled by a few megacorps, such as Sony, Turner, and News Corp. They have so much influence, much of which is not readily apparent, that we must be wary of it. Advertising also ties into this. It is everywhere now. It is impossible to exist in our current society with out being barraged with adverts for just about everything imaginable. It is a central part of our culture.
As far as the four toolsets go, they are things that i was vaguely aware of in the past, but now see more clearly everywhere I go in the media sea. The 29 POTs are especially noticeable, because I have had some previous marketing training, and was therefore was already aware of them to some extent. Having them spelled out in that manner, really made me more aware of them.
One question I would really like to have answered in the course is as follows: Where is the Internet going?
